Note to Self

Love is patient; love is kind.
Love doesn't boast or brag.
There's no arrogance in love;
it's never rude, crude, or indecent-it's not self absorbed.
Love isn't easily upset.
Love doesn't tally wrongs.
Love trusts, hopes, and endures no matter what.
Love will never become obsolete.
I'll fight for her.

Thief

Caleb Drake never got over his first love. Not when he got married. Not when she got married. When life suddenly comes full circle Caleb must decide how far he is willing to go to get the aloof and alluring Olivia Kaspen back. But for every action in life there is a consequence, and soon Caleb finds out that sometimes love comes at an unbearably high price.

My Review:

Olivia and Caleb… Caleb and Olivia… we have lived and breathed their twisted fairytale for the past several years. We are just as battered and broken as they are. We went through every exciting moment, every gut wrenching moment and every emotion with them. We loved them for the way they loved each other and hated them for the way they broke each other. What a ride the Love Me With Lies Series has been.

Thief is written in Caleb’s POV. It alternates between the present and the past. This is sometimes distracting for me but I have to admit I loved getting to see things that happened in The Opportunist and Dirty Red from his perspective. Seeing with my own eyes his motivation in some of the choices he made helped me to realize that everything he did wrong he did for the right reasons. You get to live his pain like you did Olivia’s along the way. Such crazy and unnecessary pain. If these two had just known how to talk to each other and be honest with each other so much could have been avoided. It amazed me how Caleb could know Olivia so well and be able to call her on all her bullshit and yet Leah could manipulate him like a boss.

Leah… yeah all that sympathy she garnered from me in Dirty Red… gone. G.O.N.E. GONE. She is beyond selfish, beyond manipulative, beyond dirty, she is everything that is wrong in this world. The perfect villain. Beautiful and just plain spiteful and mean. A woman not above using her own child to get revenge. I really wish she had gotten her comeuppance but…

Alas, we all know that Ms. Fisher is not a writer that gives you want you want. Not in the sense that everything is tied up in a neat happy little bow where all the bad guys get what they have coming and the good guys get there happy ending. No, in Tarryn’s world no one is the clear good guy and no one is the clear bad guy and no one deserves to ride off into the sunset. So what does Thief do? It concludes Olivia and Caleb’s story. It tells you how all the lies and the torture and the love pan out. Do you get the ending you want… yes and no. Will you be thrilled… yes and no. Is it the ending they deserve… yes. Is that pretty much what life is like for us all… yes.

I must admit that with the author’s insistence that she is not a HEA kind of story teller I was worried. I was SO worried going into this story. I almost wanted to let the ending that I had played out in my head be my ending… I had invested too many hours, too many sleepless nights and too many tears on these books to be let down… but that is not fair to the story. As a reader sometimes you just have to be brave enough to let the author take you where they want you to go. You have to open your mind to different possibilities. The story belongs to them and they allow you in. Ms. Fisher did an excellent job at keeping true to her writing and her storytelling and still giving you what you need to put these characters to bed. Let her show you. Olivia and Caleb’s twisted fairytale with a wonderful twisted ending. It was perfect… and that ladies and gentlemen is how it is done.

Favorite Quotes:

“Life does not accommodate you, it shatters you. Love is mean, but it’s good. It keeps us alive. If you need her, then wait.”

“I’ve come to the conclusion that there are no set rules in life. You do what you have to do to survive. If that means running away from the love of your life to preserve your sanity, you do it. If it means breaking someone’s heart so yours doesn’t break; do it. Life is complicated — too much so for there to be absolutes. We are all so broken."

“You’re strong enough to protect your heart and mine, and your heart from mine. I’ll give you everything I have because from the day I met you, it’s belonged to you.”

  1. Love this series! I have so many favorite scenes it is hard to chose one. In The Opportunist, when Olivia goes to Italy, her speech was so heartbreaking, I felt every word - the love, the anguish. I cannot wait to read Thief! Great review, thanks for sharing :)

  2. My fave was the last bombshell in Dirty Red. I don't want to post a spoiler in case someone hasn't read it. It's when she searched her mind for the biggest secret that could hurt Caleb. Boom! My mind was blown!

  3. I'm going to put a quote and you can guess my favorite scene hahahaha I loved this scene and obviously the quote.

“After three long years, I have what I want and it isn’t real. He doesn’t know who I am, and if he did, he wouldn’t be sitting in my living room… He doesn’t remember me. How could you forget someone you loved even if I did rip his heart to shreds?”

  4. I love the ending of The Opportunist where Noah tells Olivia, "You can only give your heart away once, after that, everything else will chase your first love." I hope Olivia and Caleb have their HEA! ♥ Thanks for your great review and for the giveaway! Can't wait to read Thief!

  6. I can't wait to read this! I just finished Dirty Red the other day knowing thus was releasing soon...OMG that ending. I hate Leah! One of my favorite scenes was when Leah tags along with Sam when he goes to Cammi' s house and it turns out to be a birthday party for Olivia. That's when she meets Noah for the first time & he tells her you don't look half as crazy as I thought you'd look, Olivia Saud something about a redheaded gargoyles with fangs. Love that can't wait to hear Caleb' s side of this story!
