Clay Maxwell is a sexy scoundrel. Unapologetic in the way he lives his life. A life of  excess. Excessive partying, drinking and woman. He likes it that way. He has it all: the money, the fun, and the beautiful woman at his side who enjoys it all just like he does. Is he a lucky SOB or what? He is the master of the game that is until the rules change…

What happens when you wake up in a hospital bed and everything has changed? You can no longer be the eternal Frat Boy but you don’t know how to be anything else. Do you say screw it and walk away from the one person who has always been a constant in your life? The one person who knows you the best and loves you in spite of it. I loved seeing the evolution of Clay in this book. We knew he was Brady’s sexy, cunning and scandalous younger brother… The black sheep of the Maxwell dynasty… but in this installment Linde really peels back the layers so we get much clearer picture of the man and what makes him tick. A closer look at the insecurities and ambition that drives him. We also get a glimpse of the surprisingly fierce loyalty he has not only to Andrea but to his family. Watch out Brady I think your baby brother may be giving you a run for your money in the favorites department. ;)

Excitement was already coursing through her body at what she was about to see. She had seen many ballets, but each time it was as if she couldn’t breathe when watching. She could judge their movements, the precision behind their leaps and turns, and the extension of the men and women onstage, but all of that would seem to blur. She would just get lost in the dance. That was all that mattered.

The lights dimmed, everyone rushed to get to their seats, and then the curtain rose, transporting the audience into another world.

Trihn sank back into her seat just as the first ballerina floated onto the stage. As she reveled in the performance, Preston ran his hand up her arm and to her shoulder, sending shivers down her spine. She glanced over at him, and he had this dirty smirk on his face. He wasn’t even watching the ballet. His eyes were solely trained on her.

She swallowed and stared forward, but her attention was torn. His fingers brushed her long tresses off her neck. The palm of his hand pushed flat against her skin and went up into her hair. He gently pulled it, and as her head dipped backward, her eyes closed of their own accord.

With his other hand, he laced their fingers together, bringing her hand to his lips. He tenderly kissed each knuckle before drawing her thumb between his teeth. She inhaled deeply.

He seemed to be enjoying himself as he kneaded the muscles in her neck. He leaned forward toward her and planted a soft kiss on her shoulder.

“Keep your eyes open. You don’t want to miss a second of this,” he breathed softly.

Dear God! He was teasing her. This was sweet, blissful torture.

She could hardly concentrate. Keeping up with two things at once, when one was tempting her with everything she wanted, was harder than it seemed. As the ballet drew to a close, she was glad that she had seen it before or else she would have been entirely lost as to what had happened during much of the performance.

His touch was captivating, and she found she was a lost cause when it came to this man. She hadn’t just forgotten the ballet in front of her face. The world had disappeared all around her. In a sea of people, there was just him.

The curtain dropped unexpectedly, bright lights flooded the auditorium, and Trihn jolted upright. Preston sat up straight, as if he hadn’t just been working her into a frenzy with the lightest touches imaginable. The smirk on his face was the only indication that anything was amiss.

Four Star ****

This is going to be a short and sweet review. I loved this book. I loved this series. I love this author. Caisey Quinn is quickly becoming one of my “go to” writers. She can weave a story so rich with real life struggles, pain, angst, humor, intellect, growth, romance and intense love that it has you wanting to heal the main character and smother him with love while in the same breath wanting to ring his neck (for you non-southerners that means beat some sense into him).

Gavin is broken and battered soul. His life has been an endless cycle of abuse. He was powerless against it when he was a boy but now that he is a man his greatest abuser is himself. The only light in his life has been his best friend Dallas Lark and his baby sister Dixie. She is the balm for his pain but can he be the man she needs and deserves? How can he have her without breaking and battering her soul too?  It’s time to man up… for himself… for his band… for his bluebird… and for a little boy that only he may know how to reach. The old saying goes “If you can’t beat’em, join’em”. Well eff that!!! Time to put on those gloves and fight Garrison!

Missing Dixie is the perfect conclusion to this series. Everything is on the line: the success of Leaving Amarillo, Gavin and Dixie’s relationship, and the fate of young Liam a boy living the life that a young Gavin once did. It’s a rollercoaster. I lost a lot of time focusing on the pain and the past. But when I stopped letting it consume me, I found myself in the same place where I always find myself. In music.

When I stopped moping and feeling sorry for myself, I made some changes in my life. I’ve found happiness and joy in giving piano and violin lessons to underprivileged local kids and it’s been such a successful program that I had to get a business license and name it. Over the Rainbow is my passion project and I’ve formed friend- ships with many of the parents of the kiddos I teach. Maybe it’s not performing onstage or coming to life beneath the lights, but I love it just the same.

If there is anything I’ve learned about gifts, like the gift of being able to play an instrument, it’s that they should be shared with the world one way or another. I also learned a valuable lesson from my grandparents that it took traveling around the country living their dream to fully comprehend. They didn’t get to live their dream but it didn’t mean they weren’t happy. Together they lived a full, satisfied life and they had plenty of love leftover to give to the two orphans they ended up raising. Life doesn’t always turn out how you expect and sometimes parts of you get broken along the way, but there is always hope and even broken pieces can be rebuilt into something beautiful. My heart is a piece of mosaic art at this point. 

Standing there, staring at myself in the glass, I vow to focus on the music, on grabbing hold of what joy I have in my life and not letting go.

Most important? I vow never again to hand my heart over to Gavin Garrison.

At least not until he hands me his first.
