Title: Deep Surrendering (Episode 1)
Author: Chelsea M. Cameron
Release: March 15, 2014

BOOK SUMMARY:

She's all about rules. He lives by none but his own. When these two meet, the results could be disastrous.
When Marisol Everly’s friend Rory sets her up with Fin Herald, Marisol doesn't expect that it will amount to anything, but that was before she saw Fin's searing blue eyes and mischievous smile. Not to mention, he seems absolutely fascinated by her mundane life. He's everything that a girl could want, but there's something else that ripples under the surface of his flirty behavior. Something darker. Something that fascinates Marisol, but scares her at the same time. Is she willing to risk falling into an abyss she might not get out of?

MY REVIEW:

Rating: 4 Star ****

Marisol Everly is a very sweet, she is smart, and she is guarded.  She lives life by a set of rules. Rules that keep things in order. Rules that keep her from getting hurt.  Is  Fin Herald going to be her exception? He is handsome, sexy, and a no nonsense kind of guy.  His professional life makes him somewhat of a drifter. Never in the same town for very long. He basically lives his life by the seat of his pants with no rules at all. Whatever feels good. No relationships, no ties that bind and little bit of a dark edge are what make up the man.  Set up on a date by friends the unlikely duo have an intense attraction and he tempts Marisol to start letting down her walls and even breaking a rule or two. In fact it doesn’t take much persuasion on Fin’s part to get her to break rule #1 right away… but then just as things start to get interesting he runs. What tha whaaaa?  What spooked him?  What secrets cause him to bolt?  Marisol seems to have her own secrets as well. She is a high society raised girl who lives meagerly.  Why? What is the story with her and her family? I can’t wait to find out.

This is a novella series so the stories are short and the reader never quite has the full picture and that is both fun and frustrating.  This series is a bit different from the other books I have read by this author. It’s a tad more mature.  She did a fantastic job here and I can not wait until April when the next episode release to see what happens next for our baffling couple.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: "Driven" by K. Bromberg

Whew, I am still reeling from this one! Check out all the book/series/author info, my review and enter the rafflecopter for a chance to win the entire series in eBook format. Good Luck & Happy Reading!

Title: Driven
Author: K. Bromberg
Release:  May 2013 by JKB Publishing

Blurb:

Rylee Thomas is used to being in control. But she’s about to meet the one man that just might make her enjoy losing it…

I am the exception to the rule.

In a world full of willing women, I’m a challenge to the roguish and achingly handsome Colton Donavan. A man used to getting exactly what he wants in all aspects of life. He’s the reckless bad boy constantly skating that razor thin edge toward out of control, on and off of the track.

Colton crashes into my life like a tornado: sapping my control, testing my vulnerabilities beyond their limits, and unintentionally penetrating the protective wall around my healing heart. Tearing apart the world I rebuilt so carefully with structure, predictability, and discipline.

I can’t give him what he wants and he can’t give me what I need. But after a glimpse beneath his refined exterior into the dark secrets of his damaged soul, can I bring myself to walk away?

Our sexual chemistry is undeniable. Our individual need for complete control is irrefutable. But when our worlds collide, is the chemistry enough to bring us together or will our untold secrets and battle of wills force us apart?

My Review:

4 Star ****

Okay I'll start by saying this one was hard for me to get into "at first". The beginning was rocky for me. I felt it was mirroring other stories I had read and I was apprehensive moving forward. I felt the main characters were a little wishy-washy and a bit split personality and it was very frustrating. I was beginning to develop a sever case of whiplash the first few chapters but I had a trusted friend in my ear telling me not to give up on the story. So I kept going... and I am so so glad I did. So trust me when I tell you not to give up. About 30% in the story starts to open up and you get a little more insight into who both Rylee and Colton are. They are both damaged souls who are drawn to each other. The inner struggle that plays within Colton in every single encounter he has with Rylee is both enduring and heartbreaking all at once. At first this insights anger in the reader and in Rylee. He hides behind his arrogance and his public persona. He has to remain in control of both his emotions and his relationships. You think it is just about ego but you learn it is more about fear. What happened to him to make him this way? What demons does he hold so tightly to? It is obvious that he doesn't love himself every much which makes it extremely hard for him to let anyone else love him. Rylee has demons of her own. Scars that run much deeper than the ones on her body. She is also scared of letting go but she is much much braver than Colton. Oh she seems sweet and fragile but as the story moves forward you realize she is anything but. I think she proves the stronger character even in her surrender to Colton's dominant personality she proves her strength. Be prepared. This book is going to jerk you around quite a bit. Your emotions are going to go on a wild ride and your kindle may not make it without a little damage. Geez that last scene... Oh. My. God.

PS: I heart Rylee's little boys. Especially Zander. AND Tawny is a skanky bitch *snickers*

Synopsis

For Luisa Chavez, a twenty-three year old former beauty queen, a better life has always been just out of her reach. Sure, she’s had men at her feet since she was a young teenager but she’s never had the one thing she’s craved – security. Having grown up in near poverty, her waitressing job in Cabo San Lucas can barely let her take care of herself, let alone her ailing parents. Every day is another unwanted advance, every day is a struggle to survive. When Salvador Reyes, the depraved leader of a major Mexican cartel, takes an interest in her, Luisa is presented with an opportunity she can’t afford to pass up. She’ll become Salvador’s wife and exchange her freedom and body for a life of riches – riches she can bestow upon her deserving parents. But Luisa quickly finds out that even the finest wines and jewels can’t undo the ugliness in her marriage, nor the never-ending violence that threatens her every move. Soon, Luisa is looking for an escape, a way out of the carefully controlled life she’s leading. She finally gets her wish in the worst way possible. As it is, being the wife of Salvador makes her an ideal target for rival cartels and there’s one particular man who needs Luisa as part of his cartel’s expansion. One particular man whose quest for power has destroyed lives, slit throats and gotten him out of an American prison. One particular man who will stop at nothing until he gets what he wants. That man is Javier Bernal. And he wants Luisa. He wants to take her, keep her, ruin her. Unless she ruins him first. ***WARNING*** This book deals with drug cartels and as such it contains a lot of sex and violence and some violent sex. It can get pretty ugly, pretty dark and pretty crazy. There is drug use, abuse, a bit of torture and dubious consent. The hero is not a hero and the villains...well, they're even worse. If this sort of thing bothers you, please do not read. This ain't no cupcake farting unicorn kind of book***

Excerpt

There was a strange moment of silence and I concentrated hard, trying to hear more than the obvious. They were all waiting. Waiting for the order. Waiting for the man in charge to speak. He did. It came from the left of me. His voice was cool, calm and collected. I didn’t have to see to know who had taken me. The man I’d heard so much about. The man I’d been taught to fear. “Gentleman,” he said and I could almost feel his infamous eyes on my body, “remove the bag.” There was a rustle and my face was immediately met with cool air that seized my lungs and bright lights that blinded me. I scrunched up my face, afraid to look, to see. Now it was all so real and I wanted to stay in the dark. “Who did this?” Suddenly cool hands were at my swollen cheek and I flinched. “Who did this?” my captor repeated, an edge to his level voice, his cigar-laced breath on my face. “Sorry,” Franco mumbled. “It was the only way to quiet her.” A heavy pause filled the room like deadweight. Finally the fingers came away from my skin and my body relaxed momentarily. I felt the man stand in front of me, bending over so he was in my face, the spicy scent of tea and tobacco emanating off of him. “Look at me Luisa Reyes.” Chavez, I thought to myself, I will always be Luisa Chavez. “Darling, aren’t you curious to where you are?” “My name is Luisa Chavez,” I said. I opened my eyes to see golden ones staring right back at me. It was like looking at an eagle. “And I know where I am. I know who you are. You are Javier Bernal.” He raised his brow in amusement and nodded. I’d seen his picture before, on the news. There was only one and that was his mugshot but even in that photo, his eyes made an impression on you. They saw right into your depths and made you question yourself. He was one of the men whom Salvador feared, even though Salvador had more power. He was the one I had been told to watch out for, the supposed reason why I’d always been locked in the compound or escorted by the local police to go shopping. And yet here I was, tied to a chair in a cold, leaking basement with nothing in it except five cartel members, a video camera and a knife that lay on top of a stool in front of me. All of that for nothing. I could escape Salvador but I could never escape the cartels. I had asked for this fate. “You know why you’re here,” Javier said with deliberation, straightening up in his sharp black suit. He walked over to the stool, swiping up the knife, and glancing at me over his shoulder. “Don’t you?” I could only breathe. I wanted to look at the others, at Este, at Franco, at the two other mystery men, but I was frozen in his gaze like a cow in headlights. “What is the knife for?” I asked, my throat painfully dry. “You’ll find out after,” he said. “It is for your husband. For your Salvador.” He stepped to the side and waved his arm at the camera. “And this is also for him.” He eyed someone over my shoulder and gave a sharp nod. I heard a rip from behind and a piece of duct tape was placed over my mouth. I squirmed helplessly and the lights in the basement dimmed. The men stepped to the side while Javier went behind the video camera. A white light came off the front of it and bathed me in an eerie glow. Javier cleared his throat, his face covered in shadow and said loudly, projecting to the camera, “This is Luiza Reyes, former beauty queen of the Baja State and property of Salvador Reyes. Salvador, we have your wife and we have a long list of demands, demands which I know you can meet. I expect full cooperation in this matter, or she dies in the next seven days. If she’s lucky. I’ll give you some time to think about what you’re willing to give up for her. Then we’ll be contacting you. Good bye.” The light on the camera switched off but the rest of the room remained dim. “I hope your husband checks his emails often. It would be a shame to have to put this on YouTube.” There was a smirk on his face at that as he slowly walked toward me, the knife glinting in his hand. His eyes burned through the shadows, then grew somber. He held up the knife. “I think it’s only going to hurt the first time.” My eyes focused on the silver of the blade but the terror inside me grew too strong and my urge to breathe through the duct tape became too difficult. My lungs seized in panic, pulsing dots appeared in my vision. I felt a hand on my collarbone, gripping the edge of my blouse and then everything went black.

Companion to "Unbreakable" -- Landon's story

**This book is a Contemporary Romance and contains mature subject matter. It is not intended for those under 17 years of age.**

I’ve found it’s easier to share my body but not my soul. I need no one, yet I crave her.

Self-assured and independent, she doesn’t need me—but she wants me, and undeniably I want her too. At war with myself as I battle the secrets of my past, I don’t know if I can allow her to see the darkest parts of me, the parts I’ve left untouched—undone.

As she chips away at the walls I’ve built for years, I fear those secrets will hold me hostage from love—forever.

My Review:

Landon Landon Landon. I fell in love with him at the end of Unbreakable. I thought I knew him but I was wrong. He is complicated. Not just your average asshole for asshole sake. He has demons that he works very hard to keep at bay. Demons that torment him in his dreams and interfere with his relationships… or his non-relationships as it were. He knows himself and he knows his limits and he never ever crosses them. Then he meets Reagan. Reagan is not his run of the mill hook up. No she wants more… she demands more. If it’s friendship or one-night stand then she chooses friendship much to Landon’s chagrin.  So for the first time since Jessica walked out of his life he actually gets to know a woman. He falls in like with her almost instantly and she slowly lets him know all of her secrets. Can he do the same for her? Can he open up those old wounds and bleed for her to see? He has gotten so good and keeping it all tied down tight protecting himself and protecting everyone else around him that letting it loose could be dangerous to them all.

Wow… this book pummeled me. Then it picked me up off the mat and sucker punched me again… and again… and again. Just when you think you have gathered your wits and regained your breath, another kick in the gut. ***I “may” have been furiously messaging the author in the middle of the night***. Landon is an alpha male and one sexy beast of a man. He is protective and demanding and a little bit kinky and we like it. We like it A LOT. Poor Reagan never really stood a chance with the whole “we can just be friends” nonsense. I am surprised she was able to hold out as long as she did. I wanted to jump into my kindle and slap her silly. Then I want to jump in and fist-bump her. Then I want to jump in and hold her tight. This story was oh so agonizing and oh so sweet at the same time. It will break you. It will thrill you. It will heal you. Just be prepared to ignore everyone and everything until Landon’s had his wicked way with you.

*Sigh* now we patiently, or NOT so patiently wait for Lindsay and Matt’s story ;)

Favorite Quotes:

“You know we all have secrets, right?” She turns to face me. “we all have scars; some scars can be seen and others cannot. Every scar has a story and every story needs to be told. When you’re ready, I’ll be here to listen to your story”

“Oh, and the second question. Why the fuck is there a broken vibrator in the trash can?” I turn my head to look at her, but she has already started walking away. “Never mind, there are some questions I would rather not know the answer to,”

Excerpt:

“What are you doing up?” I reach out and tuck a strand of her long hair behind her ear.
“I thought you left,” she whispers. I don’t know how to respond to her, because part of me
did want to leave—to flee where I don’t have to deal with these unknown feelings. Feelings that
leave me scared to death. So instead of saying anything, I pull her into a hug. I love that she’s so
tall. Her head fits right into the crook of my neck.
“You need to sleep,” I say quietly. “You have to be at work in a few hours. Go rest; I’ll be
here when you wake up—I promise.”
She pulls away and looks at me skeptically, but nods her head and shuffles down the hallway
toward her bedroom. Stopping just outside her door, she looks back over her shoulder at me, then
turns around slowly, walking back to me. Without a word, she weaves her fingers through mine
and walks us back to her bedroom. I don’t hesitate. In fact, I long for her touch and grip her hand
tighter.
“Just lie with me,” she whispers, pressing her finger to my lips so I can’t argue or refuse.
Pulling me toward the large bed, she pulls the covers back and slides in, moving to the center. I
hesitate as I watch her, wondering if it will ever be possible to “just lie with” her and not touch
her. Her long body stretches from the pillows to the end of the bed, and her fair skin is begging
me to touch it.
Sliding in next to her, she pulls me to her. Wrapping her arm across my waist, she rests her
head on my shoulder. She settles in as if she’s done it a thousand times—and it feels natural,
right.
“Thank you, Landon,” she mumbles sleepily.
“For what?” I ask, confused.

“Trying. Thank you for trying.”

Rebecca is fueled by insane amounts of coffee, margaritas, Laffy Taffy (except the banana ones), and happily ever afters.
